He was a founder of the NAACP, pioneering Pan-Africanist, spirited advocate for world peace, and tireless fighter for civil rights during the darkest days of Jim Crow. Du Bois wrote three historical works, two novels, two autobiographies, and sixteen pioneering books on sociology, history, politics, and race relations. A man of staggering intellect and drive, he was the first black to hold a doctorate from Harvard University. Born in Massachusetts in 1868, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was the foremost black intellectual of his time—and mind you, his time stretched all the way from Reconstruction to the civil rights movement of the 1960s. This landmark in the literature of black protest eloquently affirms that it is beneath the dignity of a human being to beg for those rights that belong inherently to all mankind.Sacred FireHerein lie buried many things, which if read with patience may show the strange meaning of being black here in the dawning of the Twentieth Century.

I typically can become quite bored with the overload of information over time. I did listen to this on audio which made the experience of reading it easier. As a fellow reader I did find this part interesting because I got to see an in depth look of how a library functions. While there is history in The Library Book about the fire most of what Susan Orlean focuses on in her book is how the city of Los Angeles runs their library system. If I do read Nonfiction it is normally one that is strictly historical. Nonfiction is usually a hard genre for me to tackle. It tracks the day of the fire, the accused arsonist, and how the Los Angeles Library system works in modern day. The Library Book is a Nonfiction book about the fire that happened at the Los Angeles Library in the late 1980s. He turned his gaze to the ocean, where a ship was anchored not far from the bleak Essexshire cliffs. That would make this whole miserable trek in this godforsaken rain worth it. Wouldn’t that be a surprise? He couldn’t wait to see the look of shock on the earl’s face. He didn’t know how closely his precious earldom was tied up in the whole plan. But the earl had somehow discovered everything. He had done all he could to keep his work a secret. Someone was determined to ruin everything…and that someone had to be stopped. He had received word by messenger early that morning-critical information that pointed to the possibility that the scheme he had set in motion was about to be compromised. He hadn’t planned to make this particular journey today-but some things would not wait. The creature’s fear would ordinarily irritate him and mark it for sale or slaughter, but today the wet cliffs made him equally cautious. His horse was uncertain of its footing, shying away from speed and direction in favor of steady ground. The rain fell steadily on the slick rocks marking the edge of the Essex countryside, where the land fell in sheer cliffs to a frigid winter sea. They are curious pranksters who frequently cross and challenge boundaries, as well as ignore social harmony and order. As their name suggests however, tricksters are also associated with rule-breaking. Often considered cultural heroes, tricksters are credited with protecting (and in some cases, creating) human life. While Indigenous nations construct tricksters in their own ways, there are some cross-cultural similarities. Indigenous peoples call tricksters by their own names, such as Glooscap or Glooskap (Algonquian), Wisakedjak or Weesageechak (Cree) and Nanabush or Nanabozho (Anishinaabe). In Canada, the word has been popularized by anthropologists studying the role of these figures in Indigenous teachings and oral histories.
